On May 30, 2025, like every year, the Canary Islands stop to celebrate the Día de Canarias, a day that combines history, culture and tradition. Even in Fuerteventura, the second largest island in the archipelago, the celebrations involve residents, tourists and local communities, in an atmosphere of celebration and belonging.
The origins of Día de Canarias
The Día de Canarias commemorates the first meeting of the Canary Islands Parliament, which took place on 30 May 1983 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. This event marked the effective start of the autonomy of the islands, enshrined in the Statute of Autonomy of 1982, and represents a key moment in the democratic history of the Canary Islands.
But the history of the archipelago has its roots much further back: the Canary Islands were already inhabited in pre-Hispanic times by the Guanches, a people of Berber origin with pastoral and spiritual traditions, then conquered in the fifteenth century by the Crown of Castile. Over time, the islands became a crossroads between Europe, Africa and America, enriching themselves with cultural and linguistic influences that today form the heart of the Canarian identity.
Día de Canarias 2025: current events and significance
In 2025, the Día de Canarias is not only a celebration of the past: it is also an opportunity to reflect on the present. The Government of the Canary Islands has dedicated the theme of the year to the balance between tradition and innovation, with a programme full of cultural events, educational activities and the enhancement of local crafts and flavours.
In Fuerteventura, the focus is also on sustainability and the revival of the island’s rural and artisanal heritage , in line with local development and territorial identity policies.
